How Do Solar Panels Work?

What is Solar Power?

Solar photovoltaic panels convert energy from the sun into electricity that can be used inside the home. They are an effective way of reducing one’s carbon footprint and becoming more environmentally responsible, as the panels generate a clean and green form of energy – especially when compared to more traditional fossil fuels.

Solar Power in the United Kingdom

Solarpanels  are a popular means of sourcing energy across Europe, particularly in countries that enjoy a consistent level of sunlight throughout the year. Despite the UK’s unpredictable weather, solar PV is an entirely viable source of energy, providing sufficient levels of electricity for use in the home all year round.

Back in April of 2010, the UK Government introduced the Feed-in Tariff, an incentive formed by the government to encourage the uptake of solar energy. The Feed-in Tariff ensures payment of 21 pence per unit of electricity that their system generates, regardless of whether or not it is used inside the home. These payments are currently guaranteed for 25 years.

Many providers of solar power provide the opportunity to invest in a panel array for their roof, as well as offer a system for free.

Why Solar?

Customers with a solar photovoltaic system will receive an average of 11% rate of return on their investment. It will usually pay for itself within approximately 10 years, although payments from the Feed-in Tariff will continue for up to 25 years. Combine this with the savings made on energy bills by harnessing the power of the sun, and it becomes clear as to why solar investment is beneficial financially as it is environmentally.

For customers who do not have the budget to invest in a panel array, or simply do not wish to, there are free solar schemes available. Under these schemes, the company will install a solar panel array for free, but will keep any money received from the Feed-in Tariff in order to cover the costs of installing the system. This allows the homeowner to benefit from the free electricity that the panels generate without having to pay for installation or maintenance costs.

Solar panels can also significantly reduce household energy bills, with electricity being produced from the panels as opposed to being sourced from the National Grid. These reductions will only improve as energy prices increase over time. As discussed earlier, solar energy lets homeowners reduce their carbon footprint and make an environmental difference.

How Does Converting Sunlight to Electricity Work?

Photovoltaic solar cells are formed from silicon layers which have been doped with different chemicals. These materials are chosen specifically to give the resulting material a specific property, allowing light to ‘knock’ electrons from their orbit in order to generate a direct current. When a suitable wavelength of light is absorbed by the p-n junction, some of their energy is transferred to the electrons on the material. These electrons then flow through the panels to create a direct current. The inverter, an integral part of the system, will then convert this direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC).
Install Guide

Once a system has been agreed with the solar company, they will arrive and install erect scaffolding on the agreed installation date.

For standard roof setups, roof anchors will be attached to the rafters underneath the existing tiles, after which aluminium bars are fixed, forming the frame to which the panels will be attached.

The panels are then attached to the bars using at least four clamps per panel. The panels are then wired into the inverter, before the DC wiring is repositioned to enter the property in order to connect to the electrics inside the home. In many cases, the wire is ran underneath the eaves and directly into the loft or top floor of the house.

Other installation options include in-roof panels, which have less of a visual impact, as well as photovoltaic tile systems and flat rood mounted systems. If you are interested in going sola, then your installer will be able to discuss with you the ideal system for your home.

How Do I Switch From Electric To Solar Energy

First and foremost -before you do anything, it's important to find a solar electric company that has an unparalleled understanding of the electrical needs and energy-use patterns of today’s Southern California homes and businesses, and we know how to maximize their solar resources.

When you choose the right company for your solar system install, you can take confidence from the fact that the team designing and installing your custom system is accredited by the Better Business Bureau and the National Electrical Contractors Association.  Be sure to find out if they are!

Three Things Set Apart A Good Solar Electric Company
from the average solar electric company
  • expertise
  • experience
  • affordability

You will also want to ask if your potential solar electric company has in-house licensed electrical engineers and highly trained on-site electricians that have designed and installed countless electrical systems including hundreds of custom solar designs. One company called Baker Electric Solar (BES) has a solar division that also employs NABCEP certified staff, meaning they can handle any solar photovoltaic project.  The designers’, engineers’, and solar technicians’ quality training and wealth of experience means that BES has everything we need to design and install the perfect custom system to meet your particular home or office solar power needs.

With the cost of switching to solar power, it’s essential that you can trust the quality of your installation and equipment to last you for years to come. I recommend this company because they have been installing custom solar power systems for almost a decade. BES has installed systems as small as ten panels and as large as thousands, on roofs and on open land, and in 2010 they were recognized as the biggest dealer of Sunpower photovoltaic technology in the San Diego area. Coupled with over 80 years of electrical experience, our knowledge of solar installations means you can rest assured that the quality of our work is exceptional.

One of the best things about taking advantage of renewable energy is government rebates and tax credits. These reduce the cost of making your home or business more environmentally friendly.  Baker Solar Electric is prepared to take every step necessary to help our customers maximize these deductions. They also offer zero down financing and will help design a monthly repayment plan and solar system that fits your budgetary needs.

If you are serious about solar electric panels then they just might be the company for you that will allow you to make the switch to  renewable solar energy today.

Cut Costs -How To Be Environmentally Friendly Thru Solar Energy

If you’re looking to save money and make your home more environmentally friendly, or are just interested in ways to make better use of renewable energy sources in your home, solar panels from a solid company that is well educated in electricity and solar energy can help you reach your goals.  Many do not realize that it is possible to customize the solar power setup to harness the power of the sun at your home or place of business and meet the your energy goals.

The savings opportunities are significant, and increased depending on the effectiveness of the system. For example, a home that consumes 900 kilowatt hours per month and installs a small system that can produce about 450 kilowatt hours per month would cut electricity bills in half and reduce carbon emissions similarly. This level of efficiency is very reasonable in the San Diego area, where there is ample sunlight and large homes have a big appetite for electricity.

One of the biggest reasons people decide not get solar panels installed is the initial cost. Even thinking of the cost as an investment in the value of the home and in future savings, people still worry about putting all that money into something. One way to alleviate this concern is with financing options. Government tax credits also help take the sting out.  A good solar energy installation company will help clients take advantage of government incentives for installing solar panels. Of course, the best way to alley such fears is to understand the actual value of investing in solar power. The average home or office recoups the cost of installation in five to seven years. This is a relatively short return on investment considering how long most people own their homes in San Diego.

Some people also wonder if the technology will get outpaced in the next decade and end up obsolete. It’s true that technologies for harnessing solar energy are developing rapidly. However, unlike with mobile devices or computers, the pace of change will not leave current solar installations worthless or ineffective. The infrastructure needed for a home’s solar cells to cut its electrical bills is self contained. And as long as the actual panels and other components last – crystalline photovoltaic cells usually show zero degradation after ten years and tend to perform at 80% or better after twenty years – they will still be effective in a decade, even though the newest technology at the time will certainly be more effective. And in that intervening time, our customers will have saved a great deal on their bills and reduced their carbon foot print.

The electrical and solar panel experts at Baker Electric Solar are eager to help you figure out the best plan to install solar energy panels at your home or office in a way that you can afford.
